Carrier Bags
Why do we use plastic carrier bags?
A few months before the government introduced the plastic bag charge we bought in our usual quantity of our high quality ‘bags for life’.
Previously these would have lasted us for around two years, but I am really pleased to say, that our plastic bag use has dropped by over 95%. This means that we are left with a residual stock of plastic bags and rather than send these to landfill and replace them with paper bags, we have decided to continue using these bags until they run out. Once they do, we will replace them with a paper bag instead!
Thank you to all of our customers who have been reusing our bags. Since the bag charge was introduced we have saved over half a million of our bags from going into landfill in Stamford and Rutland!
Where do our 10p carrier bag charges go?
When you buy a bag in one of our shops, ALL of the 10p carrier bag charge (plus a little more from us) goes to three fantastic charities that are very close to our hearts.
So far, with your help, we have raised over £7,250 for the three charities below:
Evergreen Care Trust
Established in 2005, the Evergreen Care Trust cares for and supports older people in Stamford, Bourne and the Deepings.
Their main focus is providing support for the elderly so that they can stay in their own home and maintain their independence.
They are also a fundamental part of these people’s social lives, promoting wellbeing and facilitating social interaction with others to prevent loneliness.
Alder Hey Children’s Charity
Alder Hey in Liverpool is a national centre of excellence and one of the largest children’s hospitals in Europe, caring for over 330,000 of the sickest children each year.
The fantastic team at Alder Hey use their expertise, hard work and dedication to provide expert, yet personal care, tailored to each individual child in their care.
LOROS Hospice
LOROS provides specialist care and support for over 2,500 terminally ill people a year across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
They do this through:
- A specialist short-stay inpatient ward for symptom management and end of life care.
- Outreach and home visits
- Day therapy
- Complementary therapy
- 24 hour counselling and advice (for both the patient and their carers and family)
