Carrier Bags
Why do we use plastic carrier bags?
A few months before the government introduced the plastic bag charge we invested in our high quality ‘bags for life’.
We did seriously consider switching to paper, but the environmental arguments for doing so were not as clear cut as we first thought and our customers told us that they need a bag to protect their shopping, especially when it was raining.
Thank you to all of our customers who have been reusing our bags. Since the bag charge was introduced we have saved over half a million of our bags from going into landfill in Stamford and Rutland!
Where do our 10p carrier bag charges go?
Our bags cost us 10p each to purchase, but when you buy a bag in one of our shops, ALL of the 10p carrier bag charge (plus a little more from us) goes to four fantastic charities that are very close to our hearts.
So far, with your help, we have raised over £8,000 for the four charities below:
Evergreen Care Trust
Established in 2005, the Evergreen Care Trust cares for and supports older people in Stamford, Bourne and the Deepings.
Their main focus is providing support for the elderly so that they can stay in their own home and maintain their independence.
They are also a fundamental part of these people’s social lives, promoting wellbeing and facilitating social interaction with others to prevent loneliness.
Alder Hey Children’s Charity
Alder Hey in Liverpool is a national centre of excellence and one of the largest children’s hospitals in Europe, caring for over 330,000 of the sickest children each year.
The fantastic team at Alder Hey use their expertise, hard work and dedication to provide expert, yet personal care, tailored to each individual child in their care.
LOROS Hospice
LOROS provides specialist care and support for over 2,500 terminally ill people a year across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
They do this through:
- A specialist short-stay inpatient ward for symptom management and end of life care.
- Outreach and home visits
- Day therapy
- Complementary therapy
- 24 hour counselling and advice (for both the patient and their carers and family)
Mindspace Stamford
Established in 2015, Mindspace Stamford is a local charity established to improve the well-being of the whole town and help people flourish, by increasing the knowledge and understanding of mental health in the community and by providing ways to prevent ill health through better conversations.
Their activities now run every weekday, and continue to be offered free of charge to all members (members being the term used for those who attend events – there is no ‘formal’ membership!).
They also invest in local initiatives and work with businesses and schools to educate people and equip the whole community so that they can support loved ones, friends, colleagues, and neighbours, to reduce the burden of loneliness and mental ill-health.
